If I only had one obsession…

Standard

I have come to realize over the last few months, that when inspiration hits, I will drop everything else to try my new obsession. I completely submerge myself into the medium and cant imagine how it lived without it or what I did before it. Recent obsessions include Zentangling, Mandalas and Art Journaling. There is a never ending list of projects and ideas mostly introduced to me by Pinterest and some amazing art blogs. So every day I am inspired to try something else. Here are some photos of recent works.

My little flower, honestly cant remember who I was inspired by but I believe it was either Willowing or Suzi Blu, another fantastic mixed media artist. http://suziblu.typepad.com/

Im so grateful to have the chance to see what others are doing and to be completely inspired and rejuvenated by them. I am also so thankful that they are willing to share with the world. The Arts community is an amazing group of people and I am proud to be a part of it finally.

Change of use APPROVED! and my obsession with Zentangle drawings…

Standard

There seems to be a light, just barely visible at the end of the tunnel. I sure didn’t think it would take this long but we have a lease and have been approved by the city of Calgary for a change of use permit. This means we can now submit permits, get the construction happening and have a potential opening date for the centre. This has been an incredibly challenging and stressful endeavor, where as you know I have tried to remain optimistic in the face of crazy road blocks. It’s very exciting to think that we may actually be moving forward!

In attempting to keep myself busy over the last month, I have become obsessed with Zentangle and line drawing. If you don’t know of or have never heard of Zentangle and you are not looking for a new addiction, don’t look this up. Zentangle was created by Ron and Maria, as a means of creating beautiful imagery with relaxation and simplicity in mind. To me, Zentangle is a sort of prescribed way to create imagery without having to think too much about it. You create works of art using structured patterns. To do one of these drawings, you create a “string” or a line that will go all over the page or tile. This line will intersect others and give you a space to draw in the structured pattern. If you Google this, you will find that there are hundreds, and I mean hundreds of pattern examples to use. Each section gets a different pattern and at the end, the result is stunning. I have also found people using dice or other means to choose the structured pattern so you don’t even have to think about making choices, which I think is a great idea, especially for us perfectionists out there. If you would like more information on Zentangle look at www.zentangle.com or www.tanglepatterns.com for more info.

Not being one to stay in the box, I prefer to use full pages then to use the suggested 3.5″ square tile…but to each his own. Here are a few examples of my Zentangle images… I used Pigma Sensei Magna drawing set of markers to make these. Such great markers!

With these Zentangle inspired images, I used stamps at the centre and then drew around them with the structured patterns. I then used watercolour paints to highlight the stamped images. In both I also used stamps to create some of the open areas. I feel like the sky is the limit to creating these types of images.

I also made this piece with using Adirondack alcohol inks as the background colour, I stamped an image in the centre and then did a Zentangle inspired imagery around the stamped picture. For this one I used Faber-Castel Pitt Pen marker kits. Also a really nice selection of markers for line drawings.

when I'm with you

I recently joined a group of others who enjoy Zentangle as much as I do. I would love to be able to offer this type of drawing to people at my art centre, maybe as more of a journaling or relaxation program most likely pared with creating mandala images. I love how adaptable and freeing this medium is and would like to see how it could develop and be used with people with disabilities. I think it will be fantastic!

Pinterest…Im addicted…

Standard

Seriously I can not get enough of Pinterest…I mean just when I think, I should go to bed, Im still on it for hours. In starting an art centre, there is a plethora of art activities for all ages and abilities. Tonight I was endlessly learning about how to use gel mediums as transfers onto any medium (canvas, wood, fabric). Its amazing.

The other day, I was trying to explain Pinterest to my mom, she is one of the craftiest people I know (clearly where I got my abilities from) so I really wanted her to get inspired by all the amazing things on Pinterest. But its kind of hard to grasp the concept of what Pinterest is at first, but when you get it…its like magic. Pinterest is like an amazing filing cabinet of topics all organized in one place. If you want info on scrapbooking, you type that in and a ton of images come up. If you like a particular image then you click on it (and hopefully its not spam) and it takes you to a tutorial or instructions on how to do or make something. No more searching, its already been done for you! I thought I was skilled until I saw what others came up with. Very impressive, but I warn highly,  its freakin addictive! The other day, my boyfriend had to come and literally and Im not kidding, turn off my computer screen so I would go to bed. Its pathetic…but check it out if you darE!!

Tonight, I got hooked on a vintage digital stamps that you can print out/copy/use for free. http://freevintagedigistamps.blogspot.ca/ gorgeous site if you are looking for mixed media images. Beautiful selection of free vintage images. They also have an Etsy store.

Crap I just went to look at the link and got hooked looking again. Alright,  enough, time for bed. Check this out though, really great stuff.

The never ending business plan…

Standard

Oh Man … there is a reason creative people aren’t accountants…its absolute torture taking something fabulous and making it one dimensional. So I write what I want to say and then my boyfriend takes it and makes it readable to those who want it summed up in one page. He even wrote in the plan…”boring stuff goes here, Ill do that part”.

So while I’m waiting for the boring part to be written, I’m experimenting with the projects I want to implement with my potential clients. Now that’s where Pinterest comes in…I thought I was creative until I went on there. There are seriously talented people out there reminding me of all Ive missed since being a working stiff for the last 5 1/2 years. Shrinky Dinks, forgot all about them and mixed media art…I’m in heaven. Ill post some pics of what I have done so far.

Getting to be very exciting and scary all at the same time with starting your own business.
